Why pray?

This is probably the first question we should ask ourselves when we decide to pray.

I came across this question when I was doing some research around prayer and keeping a prayer life journal. You might ask me, what do you mean, why pray? I grew up Christian and prayer was just one of those things that was instilled in me at an early age. I was taught to pray before my meals, to give thanks after them and before I went to bed. I never really questioned it. I just did it.

How about you? You might not have grown up with prayer the way I did. You might be a skeptic and believe praying is a waste of time or you might be a new Christian and are exploring how to pray.

There are so many answers to the question “why pray” and you could probably tell me all the things that need prayer in your life, in your friend’s life and in this world. It changes all the time and our dependence on God is great. We need a lot of things and we need a lot of answers.

The most beautiful answer I have read is that when we pray, we crawl into the lap of our Father. He listens to our needs and shares His unfailing love with us. Through this time with Him, we get to know Him, know His character, know His love for others and receive advice from Him.

God waits for us each day and He can’t wait to listen to what we have to say. Whatever it is, He is ready, waiting and wanting your attention. He so desires this relationship with you.

Start your relationship; renew your relationship with God today! Simply start praying. He will meet you wherever and whenever.

“Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.” 1st Thessalonians 5:17-18
